What is Computer Systems?

The quickly evolving field of computer systems is a blend of software, programming and hardware. From coding and networking to cybersecurity, if you enjoy working with technology and troubleshooting, this could be the career path for you.

Students in this program learn to design, code and develop both windows and Web-based application components. They also create and implement a plan to install, configure and troubleshoot multiple computer operating systems. Career Opportunities

Graduates of a Computer Systems program can find careers in a variety of areas such as a cybersecurity specialist, computer programmer, database administrator, computer operator, system analyst, and software engineer. Computer Programmer

Computer programmers write and test code that allows computer applications and software programs to function properly. They turn the program designs created by software developers and engineers into instructions that a computer can follow.

The median annual wage for computer programmers was $82,240 in May 2017.

Employment of computer programmers is projected to decline 7 percent from 2016 to 2026. Computer programming can be done from anywhere in the world, so the global market is increasing while the US market is declining.

Certified Cyber Defense Specialist

Certified cyber defense specialists focus on network defense, ethical hacking, penetration testing, threat intelligence analysis and forensic investigation.

The median annual wage for cyber defense specialists was $99,730 in May 2019.

Database Administrator

Database administrators (DBAs) use specialized software to store and organize data, such as financial information and customer shipping records. They make sure that data are available to users and secure from unauthorized access.

The median annual wage for database administrators was $87,020 in May 2017.

Employment of database administrators is projected to grow 11 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth in this occupation will be driven by the increased data needs of companies across the economy.

Computer Systems Analyst

Computer systems analysts, sometimes called systems architects, study an organization’s current computer systems and procedures, and design solutions to help the organization operate more efficiently and effectively. They bring business and information technology (IT) together by understanding the needs and limitations of both.

The median annual wage for computer systems analysts was $88,270 in May 2017.

Employment of computer systems analysts is projected to grow 9 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The further adoption of cloud computing by both large and small businesses and an increasing use of IT services in healthcare settings is expected to increase demand for these workers.

What style of classes are offered in the Computer Systems program?

The majority of classes in the Computer Systems program are offered during the day with some night classes. They are a mix of on campus and online.
