Yost named May Rotary Student of the Month
Terra State Community College student Abby Yost has been named the College’s Fremont Rotary Student of the Month for May.
Yost, from Bellevue, is studying interactive media. A 2020 high school graduate, Yost was homeschooled from kindergarten through 12th grade. She has maintained a 4.0 during her first year at Terra State and is the libero for the women’s volleyball team, which made their first trip in school history to nationals this spring.
“From the beginning, everyone has been so nice and helpful. Plus, I’ve made new friends, enjoyed my teachers and had so many new experiences,” said Yost, “Volleyball has been such a highlight. Going to nationals is an experience I’ll never forget.”
Her nominator, head volleyball coach Stephanie Champine, credits Yost for her strong work ethic and willingness to learn. As a walk on for the team, Yost’s determination to succeed and grow as a player lead her to become the starting libero.
“Abby has been such an inspiration to her teammates and consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to academic achievement,” said Champine, “She had been homeschooled her whole life and was able to get reps on a small school team as a setter…To see the level she once played at and the level she is now is inspiring in itself.”
Yost chose interactive media because of her love and interest to learn more about design and media. She hopes to become a professional photographer with her own business, but is still exploring the many career opportunities open to her.
“I remember working and saving up for my first DSLR camera at age 15 with my babysitting money, and then I got my first job to help pay for it. I still have that camera today, and I use that as a way to get away from things. It’s my escape from the world,” said Yost.
Outside of class and volleyball, she volunteers at her church nursery and enjoys being active at her local bike trail, rollerblading and the gym.
