Gioffre Aims Down Fairway as New Golf Coach

The Terra State Titans Golf team has secured a head coach, Frank Gioffre. “I am excited to be a part of the continuous building of Titans Athletics at Terra State,” said Gioffre. “The excitement around golf is contagious, and I am looking forward to building a great team. I would like to thank President Dr. Ron Schumacher and Athletic Director Gregg Hedden for their support in creating this program.”

Gioffre is not a newcomer to the links, previously serving as an assistant golf coach at Oberlin College from 2002 - 2005. Additionally, he served as the head golf coach for both boys’ and girls’ golf teams at Huron High School from 2006 – 2013. While at Huron High School, he had taken teams to the state tournaments on numerous occasions and received the Coach of the Year award. The experience Gioffre has in coaching golf and being a leader will be valuable as he transitions to his new position.

If his name sounds familiar, Gioffre has been a part of Terra State Titans Athletics since 2019. He has served as the Titans Women’s Basketball Head Coach from 2019 – 2022 and is ready to begin his new journey coaching Golf.

“I have worked very hard in studying the game of golf, through the use of analytics and trackman technology. The game of golf is more involved than just watching an individual swing. Our golfers will need to be both mentally and physically prepared to compete at the college level, and I believe I can achieve that,” said Gioffre.

Aside from coaching golf, Gioffre also coached the boys’ jayvee basketball team at Sandusky High, served as head basketball varsity boys’ coach at Fremont Ross from 1990 - 1995 and then returned to college as a graduate assistant for the basketball team under Rollie Massimino at Cleveland State University.

After four seasons at Cleveland State, Gioffre served as head boys’ basketball coach at Huron High School for three seasons and then worked as an assistant basketball coach at Oberlin College from 2002 - 2017. He also started girls’ golf at Huron in 2005 and coached the team for seven seasons.

Gioffre spent the last 25 years as a teacher at EHOVE, working on a satellite program that was connected with Huron for 20 years. The last five years of his teaching career were spent at EHOVE exclusively until he retired in May of 2019.

Recruiting for the new Titans Golf team is in full swing, and practice begins in the fall. Gioffre has been working hard to recruit a great team for this upcoming season by calling schools, traveling throughout the state to talk to high school students about their interests and attending numerous golf matches, including state tournaments.

“The popularity of golf is the highest it has been in years, and I am thrilled that Terra State gets to be a part of that. The College provides a unique experience for student athletes, to receive a great affordable education while continuing to play the sport they love,” said Gioffre.

Titans Golf will be teeing up their season this year as part of Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XII Division III and compete as part of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference. The teams will begin playing their regular schedule during the 2022-2023 school year.
